Identifying appropriate information sources and databases

Having clarified your research question and thought of some potential search terms the next stage is to decide where to look.

As a staff member of WSLHD or a student on placement you have access to an excellent range of specialist health information sources.  If you are associated with a university you should also explore your university library resources.

See below for an overview of available information resources or go direct to the WSLHD E-resources webpage

Internet searching: sometimes it is worth trying Google or another internet search engine to find information. Government policy and legal documents, practice guidelines, conference papers, patient information and open source research can all be found by searching the open internet and are sometimes not included in the subscription resources.  Tip: You can use .gov .au in your search to limit to official Australian sites.   Of course you need to carefully evaluate all information sources, especially if you found them on the open internet.

Good places to start

Two really useful places to start researching for any topic are Medline and Google Scholar - see Effective searching tips for step by step guides.
