EndNote 21 - How-to

Online Search Mode

If you use the Integrated Library & Online Search Mode (the last icon), your retrieved references go  straight into your library (and cannot easily be deleted), so it is best to choose the Online Search Mode (Temporary Library) option, which keeps the retrieved references in a separate space until you copy them across to your library.

To use the online search mode:

  1. Select the Online Search Mode icon, located at the top of the EndNote Library window.
  2.
  3. The online search Group will now open in the left panel of your EndNote Window.
  4.
  5. Click on the connection required in the list, or select More.... to view the complete list of the EndNote connection files.
  6.
  7. Scroll down the list and select a library catalogue to search, then click Choose. You could also try the PubMed (medical) database which requires no password.
  8.
  9. When connection has been established, an Online Search panel appears at the bottom of your library window.
  10.
  11. Enter the search terms, then click Search. Highlight the references you wish to bring into your library, then right-click your mouse and Copy References To... and choose your library. Or just click on the icon Copy to Local Library.
  12.
  13. Click on Local Library Mode to return to your library.
